Headed for the
May Day parade and the celebration this afternoon in Powderhorn Park? Be sure to check out the
Magic Bus, a brand new diner on wheels (do not call it a roach coach; it's spotlessly clean) with seating for eight, serving up hot dogs (meat and vegan), vegetarian chili, popcorn, cookies, vegetarian and more. Okay, not exactly brand new - it's actually a 1978 Chevrolet school bus with a brand new psychedelic paint job. I just happened to be on hand yesterday for the Magic Bus Cafe's very first day of business, at the
Midtown Farmer's Market. Turns out that the team behind the Magic Bus has some serious gastronomic credentials - Chris Lockyear is the chef de cuisine for the catering division of D'Amico & Partners, while his wife Cathy is the assistant catering manager for the Wedge Co-op. The third member of the team is Cathy's identical twin sister, Chrissy, who creates displays for the Bibelot shop in Northeast Minneapolis. The meat hot dogs are all-beef natural casing franks made by Boar's Head. The menu includes about half a dozen variations on the tube steak theme, ranging from a plain meat or vegan dog for $3.75 to a grateful dog topped with psychedelic curry relish for $4.25, and a magic chili dog with Wisconsin Co-Jack cheese, bean chili, and organic chopped onion for $5.00. They'll be back at the Midtown Farmer's Market next Saturday. For other upcoming appearances, check out their
website.
