Okay, Flint, Michigan isn't exactly known for its cuisine, but Mike Staab, owner of
Stabby's Cafe, 42nd and Cedar Ave. S., Minneapolis, grew up in Flint, and there are a couple of dishes on the menu that pay tribute to his home town: a Flint-style Coney Island hot dog, as served at Angelo's and the Starlight Coney in Flint, (with a drier chili sauce than Detroit-style Coneys), a Stab's Halo burger (topped with onions, pickle, green olive and American cheese, inspired by the burger served at the Flint-based
Haloburger chain, and of course, Vernor's ginger ale. Just had the Farmer Pete Omelet ($8.50). And I am going to have it for breakfast tomorrow as well. And if there are still any leftovers, I'll probably finish it off on Sunday. It's stuffed with bacon, onions and spiced hashbrowns, topped with sausage gravy, and served with more hashbrowns on the side. Delicious.
Lots more on the menu, including biscuits and gravy, buttermilk pancakes, a Bob Eubanks hot dog (another Flint reference), sandwiches and soups. Free wifi and organic fair trade coffee.
